TerrAdapt is a nonprofit organization that partners with state and federal government agencies, Indigenous governments and communities, and conservation NGOs across North and South America to co-create environmental insights at scale, providing the near-real-time situational awareness they need to conserve our natural heritage in an era of rapid environmental change. Through these partnerships, TerrAdapt delivers cutting-edge environmental monitoring and assessment systems, leveraging the latest technologies in remote sensing, AI, and cloud computing provided through Google Earth Engine and Google Cloud applications.

Changes in policy, staffing, mandates, and funding priorities within the US federal government are disrupting conservation initiatives in the US and in other countries that rely on US aid and science support. Meanwhile, the current administration is seeking to expand natural resource extraction in sensitive habitats while decreasing oversight and transparency. With its cutting edge environmental monitoring systems and proven track record, TerrAdapt is ideally positioned to illuminate emerging threats and help motivate action to safeguard our natural systems. Please support TerrAdapt with a donation. Your contribution will help grow this organization and scale its impact globally during a critical decade for our biosphere.

A clear example of the importance of TerrAdapt’s work is in the recovery of grizzly bears in the North Cascades Ecosystem along the border with Washington and British Columbia. Grizzly bears were extirpated from this region in the last century, but in 2024, the US Fish and Wildlife Service issued a ruling that paves the way for reintroductions to establish a new population. Similar efforts are underway on the Canadian side of the border. To support management of habitat for a newly established population of bears, TerrAdapt co-developed a grizzly bear habitat monitoring system with wildlife agencies, Tribes, First Nations, and NGOs from the US and Canada. This system provides managers with broad awareness of how disturbances like timber harvest and wildfire affect bear habitat, helping them coordinate and strategically implement actions to conserve a landscape that will support the reintroduced population. TerrAdapt is also working with First Nations to help make the case for the creation of two Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas, the Ashnola and Stein-Nahatlatch, that will protect prime grizzly bear habitat in the region.

Grizzly bears have long been extirpated from the North Cascades Ecosystem. TerrAdapt is working with partners including state and federal agencies in the US as well as Tribes and First Nations to track grizzly bear habitat in the region to identify critical areas for protection and restoration as bears are reintroduced into this landscape. The image above shows TerrAdapt’s grizzly bear habitat monitoring system tracking changes in grizzly bear habitat (increasing in quality from blue to yellow) from 1984 to 2024. Habitat disturbances from wildfire (red) and timber harvest (pink) detected by TerrAdapt’s monitoring system are also shown.
